Description

Simplicity, necessity and ingenuity

The key principles for building a three legged staked stool are simplicity, necessity and ingenuity. Using just one type of joint it’s possible to create a robust structure from almost any species of wood that can be used to make a variety of different pieces of furniture – tables, chairs and stools of almost any shape and size.

The design for this stool belongs to Chris Schwarz from Lost Art Press. In 2019 I watched him teach a group of complete beginners how to make them and I’ve been smitten with the design ever since. Back then Chris taught this project as an introduction to chair making. I’ve made several for myself in the last few years and helped several complete beginners build their own so I know it’s a great design.

Although the project is not without its’ challenges it is an excellent introduction to woodworking in general. This version is designed around the stock forms of timber you can buy from any good builders merchant, DIY store or timber yard making it easy to repeat when you’re ready to fly solo. Are they comfortable? During the pandemic I spent hundreds of hours delivering online lessons from my workshop at home perched on one of these so, yes.

As well as developing a range of techniques for marking out and cutting joints with hand tools, you will also learn how to read the grain of a piece of wood and assess its suitability for a specific purpose.

Tools and materials will be provided.
